Once you have successfully purchased a new house (if it is not a service apartment) then your house probably has little to no furniture, decoration or lighting as these have all been taken along with the people who sold you the house. You should think of this as a blank slate on which you will be able to express your designing ideas.
There are a few things you can do to get started as you make your house a nice and inviting place. Whenever you decorate a room, you should always start with the biggest, most used room. Formulate a rough furniture plan in your head. Ask yourself key questions; what is this room going to be used for, will there be kids around, will food be eaten in here (I'm sure you can think of more). Now delve even deeper into what you think your house should look like. Will your house have a certain decor theme? Will this room be keeping with that theme or be abstract?
Now check with the materials you have. Are you contracting with someone who will bring in their own curtains/windows/paint and install them for you? If so, you can now choose what colors you want the room to have according with your theme. For example, if your house is in shades of blue and white, you can have the walls painted an aqua blue with a deeper blue set of curtains and a white ceiling. The key word is to experiment here and that is what many couples like to do at this stage.
Finally you should find room "accessories", such as lamps, vases and ornate cupboards for example in order to make the room feel lived in. A warm colored vase and matching wooden cupboard set are guaranteed to make any house seem inviting. This is because different combination of items can arouse similar feelings in anybody.
It is very important to go with your gut instinct on decisions, if you are indecisive or find yourself being led by someone else then tell them you feel this way. It is you who is going to be living there after all, not them.
